IND vs AUS ODI Series: Ashwin in line to replace injured Axar Patel for Australia series
The experienced all-rounder R Ashwin is likely to make a comeback for the Indian team because Axar Patel won’t be available for the first two ODIs against Australia, which begin this Friday. India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, mentioned that Shreyas Iyer is also close to being fit for the series opener.
Even though Washington Sundar was called up for the Asia Cup final, Rohit Sharma clarified that R. Ashwin, the veteran offspinner, is still in contention for a spot in the World Cup squad.
Rohit Sharma said, “Ashwin, who can both bat and bowl as a spinner, is in consideration. I’ve been in touch with him over the phone. Axar’s injury came up at the last moment, so Washington Sundar had to step in and fulfill that role for us.”
In the upcoming series against Australia and the World Cup squad selection, Ashwin will be competing with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar for a spot.
Ashwin’s ODI record: He has taken 151 wickets in 113 matches, ranking 14th among all Indian bowlers in ODIs.
Matches | Wickets | Average | Economy | 4w | Strike rate |
113 | 151 | 33.49 | 4.94 | 1 | 40.6 |
Ashwin was a part of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad and the 2015 World Cup team. However, he fell out of favor in ODIs after the 2017 Champions Trophy and a subsequent tour to West Indies. Since then, he has only played two ODIs, both against South Africa in early 2022, where he managed to take just one wicket.
